Healing : Healing time is different for everyone. Typically 6-8 weeks should be sufficient for healing and for the pain to subside. Continue to use the cream prescribed by your doctor, if none was given call your doctor. In addition, try soaking in a tub with warm water and epsom salt three times a day. Only use enough water to cover your bottom. You can also try tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil for pain. If you do not feel better soon follow up with the doctor that performed the surgery. Take care.

You : You can expect some pain after surgery. If your doctor gave you a prescription medicine for pain, take it as prescribed. Ask your doctor what over-the-counter medicines are safe for you. At this point in your post-operative course, you are probably on a regular foods - at this point you should be increasing the amount of fiber in your diet. You should take stool softeners that contain fiber to help make your bowel movements smoother and decrease the straining during defecation that increase the pain. You may apply numbing medicines before and after bowel movements to relieve pain, including local anesthetics that contain drugs as Lidocaine and can be obtained over-the-counter. Lidocaine-topical is a generic brand name that can help to resolve a variety of problems that cause irritation. The brand names for this are LidaMantle and xylocaine (lidocaine). Ice packs applied to the anal area may reduce swelling and pain. Frequent soaks in warm water (sitz baths) help relieve pain and muscle spasms. If this does not improve the pain, you should follow-up with the surgeon to check for problems.
