It : It depends on what you mean by "not normal". Are they irregular? Are you concerned about your discharge? Pregnancy is the most common cause of a missed period. Young women who have only just started having a period in the last 2-3 years will also have irregular periods and this is normal. There are other reasons besides pregnancy that can cause a woman to miss a period such as: stress, diet, excessive exercise or a hormone imbalance such as with a thyroid disorder or polycystic ovarian syndrome. Brownish discharge during a period is just older blood as opposed to red blood which is fresher. If you continue to have an irregular cycle, concerns about your discharge, or any other questions, you should give your doctor or your ob/gyne a call. Good luck!

The : The first thing that needs to be ruled out is pregnancy. If you are not pregnant then irregular periods can be due to a hormonal imbalances such as in pcos (polycystic ovarian syndrome) thyroid disorders or premature ovarian failure. The brown discharge could represent old blood or an infectious process. You should see your doctor for a complete evaluation and work up for this problem, and also discuss birth control pills as a way to regulate your cycle. Best of luck.
