Pain : Pain by itself is very non specific. Pain getting worse is something to be evaluated by a medical provider. Pain is a signal that something is up. Nerve compression such as carpal tunnel can be accompanied by pain radiating to the elbow. Arthitis at the base of the thumb is present with local pain and pain up the radial or thumb side of the forearm a disorder in a tendon such as trigger finger or dequervains tenosynovitis can give proximal pain. Any hand or wrist related disorder can give pain that shoots up the arm. More specifics are needed these are the more common things. However its possible that you just slept on t funny. If it persists or is accompanied by other issues chest pain, shoudler neck pain , upper arm pain , pain in the flank or side or pain when breathing or coughing then it is less lklkely hand related.

Hopefully : Hopefully your symptoms are now improving. If it is related to neurologic dysfunction then the most likely explanation would be a nerve root injury from the neck. If that is so then a few further questions are necessary: •what activities and head positions increase or decrease symptoms? This information can be helpful for both diagnosis and treatment. •when did the injury occur, what was the mechanism of injury, and what was done at that time? I know you said that you woke up with the pain but perhaps did you do something the day before which could have elicited the pain? •have you experienced previous episodes of similar symptoms or localized neck pain? Do you have other neurologic symptoms such as pins and needles, numbness, or weakness? •what previous treatments (prescribed or self-selected) have you tried? These may include: â—¦the use of ice and/or heat â—¦medications (eg, acetaminophen, aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [nsaids]) â—¦physical therapy, traction, or manipulation â—¦injections â—¦surgical treatments. •a social history should include your activities and hobbies to look for any potential source of the problem. As far as the cause for a radiculopathy, compression may be from a disc herniation, degenerative changes about the neural foramen, or a combination of the 2. A study in patients with cervical disc disease found that compression of a nerve root produced limb pain, whereas pressure on the disc produced pain in the neck and medial border of the scapula. Thus you should seek a neurologic consultation to figure out the source of your problem and determine the plan of action. Good luck and i wish you well.
