Unrelated defects: Anomalous pulmonary venous return means the veins which carry oxygen rich blood from the lungs do not enter the heart correctly. The blood is diverted and returns to the right rather than the left side of the heart. Transposition of the great vessels means the arteries leaving the heart are reversed. Oxygen rich blood returns to the lungs and oxygen poor blood returns to the body.

See below: Anomalous pulmonary venous return means taht 1 or more of the pulmonary veins returns blood from the lung to the right atrium instead of the left atrium. Transposition is a defect where the aorta origninate from the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery comes from the left ventricle which is backwards.
