First, : First, home pregnancy tests are very accurate these days. If you are concerned, it is not a bad idea to repeat the pregnancy test. It is not impossible that one would be defective and report a negative result when it is actually positive. When someone has an irregular period, the most likely reason is that they did not have a normal ovulation or the ovulation did not occur at a normal time for them. It is ovulation, and the hormones that are produced after ovulation, that lead to a normal period. It is pretty normal to have an unusual period every once in a while. If this is happening frequently, you should see your doctor. Another reason for an irregular period is an early pregnancy that was lost. A significant percentage of women will get pregnant when they are exposed to sperm and ovulate, but the pregnancy fails so early, it is not even noticed or it is only noticed as a period which is a few days late. If pregnancy is not desired, reliable contraception your best bet.
