If : If you are planning on becoming pregnant, you should start taking prenatal vitamins before you do become pregnant. The good news is that prenatal vitamins contain iron along with Folic Acid and calcium - all important for the health of your baby. You should also contact your doctor to discuss whether you need any additional supplementation since i don't know the severity of your iron deficiency. That being said, one of the reasons we start women on birth control pills for low iron is to stop the loss of iron from bleeding during menstruation. Since most women don't menstruate while pregnant, you won't have to worry about low iron from heavy periods.

IV iron: Agree with Dr. McMullen: If your iron level is too low to be correctly quickly with oral iron, talk to your doctor for correcting the deficiency with intravenous iron that can be given in one sitting.
