A : A sore throat is a pretty non-specific complaint that can have many causes. Most commonly, it is caused by a virus and really shouldn't last more than a few days. A sore throat that persists could be something more serious such as a chronic infection, strep, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and in rare cases, even cancer (especially if you smoke, drink or have been exposed to the hpv virus). Because of this, it is important that you see your doctor or an otolaryngologist (ear nose and throat specialist) to find the cause of your sore throat so it can be properly and effectively treated. Unless you are having difficulty breathing, extremely high fevers, or are dehydrated because you are unable to drink or swallow, you probably do not need to go to the emergency room. You should call your doctor for an appointment. No one can tell whether you have mono, strep or just another virus without an exam and testing.

Unlikely: Sounds like you have a cold. Mono is characterized by sore throat, fever, swollen neck lymph nodes, splenomegaly, abnormal liver enzymes, atypical lymphocytosis and a postitive mono serology.

ER Visits: If your situation is one where there is uncontrolled bleeding, broken bones, you haven't peed in 18 hours, or have difficulty breathing or chest pain you might need ER care. If you are able to keep enough fluids down to pee every 8 hours, you can arrange a doctor visit or go to urgent care during regular hours. What you have must be based on history, exam and test findings.
