There : There are several reasons why patients can stop getting periods. Pregnancy must be ruled out first if there is any possibility. Dietary changes such as malnutrition can cause missed periods. Hormonal problems, like pituitary problems, can cause irregular periods. If you continue missing your period please be evaluated for a medical problem.

Late period: At age "46", a woman's periods may be delayed secondary to the ovaries requirements for ovulation to be increased by the manufacture of additional follicle stimulatory hormone (FSH). This is considered a normal "pre-menopausal" consequence of aging, and not "true menopause". Ask your gyn provider about low dose oral contraceptives, which will stop ovarian activity.
