Nipples : Nipples can be painful a few times during the menstrual cycles. Pre-ovulation, the hormone, estrogen, is at work and is released to help prepare the uterus for possible pregnancy. This hormone increases water retention and can make the breast and nipples feel tender. After ovulation, the hormone Progesterone is released which can have similar effects. If you are pregnantm the release of both of these hormones cause breast tenderness and nipple changes/pain. Other things that may cause nipple soreness is simply clothing rubbing against the nipples, causing them to be excoriated.

Ovulation delay: sometimes if you don't ovulate you can get a relative estrogen excess temporarily. This can cause nipple tenderness
