The : The secretory phase of the menstrual cycle lasts 14 days. This is relatively constant among women. The follicular (growth) phase is more variable. If you are accustomed to having 28 day cycles and then are suddenly "late" without being pregnant, you may have had a longer follicular phase. You also may not have ovulated in which case the "period" that follows is anovulatory bleeding rather than a true period. If your cycles are irregular as a rule you are likely not ovulating regularly.

Late period: Not sure of what your question is. A woman can take a home pregnancy test as soon as she is late. There are early pregnancy tests which can be taken even prior to missing a period.
