Depending : Depending on your age - the average is about 10days to 2 weeks - younger heal faster and hurt less. Despite what ads say - technique of tonsillectomy makes little difference.

Not fun: The recovery after tonsillectomy is quite painful. Most surgeons prescribe narcotic pain medicine, and the average patient takes it for 4-6 days. By 7-10 days most patients are able to resume normal diet. The other worrisome risk is bleeding from the tonsillectomy sites, generally occurs in 2-3% of cases.
