It : It is not normal for any lumps to be felt in the underarm area and it is important to bring this to the attention of your doctor. There are a variety of conditions that could lead to lumps in the underarm, including benign cysts, fat deposits (lipomas) or enlarged lymph nodes. Out of these, having enlarged lymph nodes is the condition that requires prompt medical attention and workup. The fact that the lumps are painful suggests an inflammatory condition that could arise from certain types of infection (e.g. Cat scratch disease) and cause enlarged lymph nodes. Many other conditions can lead to enlarged lymph nodes, such as autoimmune disorders, systemic infections, certain medications and even some types of cancer. Your doctor will perform a thorough physical exam looking for other lumps around the body, in particular, around your neck, underarm and groin area. This is because in many conditions lymph nodes can be enlarged throughout the body, but only noticed by patients at one site. Be sure to report the following symptoms to your doctor: feeling feverish, having chills or night sweats, unusual rashes, unexplained weight loss, muscle and joint aches.

Don't guess-get exam: While lumps of the underarm could be swollen lymph nodes, cysts, folliculitis, hidradenitis, abscesses, etc., you do not want to misjudge and ignore early breast cancer. While breast cancer would not be the most likely cause, this is potentially so serious you should not self diagnose. The other possibilities have treatments that could relieve your discomfort. So why suffer? See you doctor. Now.
