Many causes: One of the most common causes of hip pain. Is osteoarthritis. Oa is usually seen in middle and old age, I do not know your age.
Other causes include impingement syndromes, bursitis, muscle issues, snapping hip, trauma, transient osteoporosis, osteonecrosis or avn, and the list goes on.
I recommend that you see your pcp or an orthoedic surgeon. www.aaos.org/findanortho/.

Hip bursitis: It is likely that you have a condition called trochanteric bursitis of your hip--it is inflammation of the area surrounding the curve of the hip-thigh bone. Possibly resulted from excessive use/walking/running and/or laying on the side on a firm/hard surface too long. Hip arthritis and disc disease can cause hip pain as well. Motrin/aleve may help. If not better, consult doc for eval.
Good luck.

Need X-rays and eval: Many people believe they have hip pain when in truth they really have back pain. Your need to be evaluated by a physician and x rays need to be done.

See details: How can you possibly believe a doctor who cannot examine the hip area can give you a specific diagnosis? See an orthopedist or rheumatologist and get the hip evaluated. Bursitis, arthritis, tendinitis, lower back issues and even tear can cause this pain.
