Not if still drunk: Once diagnosed as an alcoholic, you will always be an alcoholic. In order to qualify for a liver transplant most centers require that you have been dry for at least 6 months, are honest with yourself and others about the harmful role of alcohol in your life, and have developed a strong + available support structure for staying dry. You also need to keep medical appointments + take meds reliably.

Yes: Many recovered or recovering alcoholics do every year. Discuss the best approach with your local hepatologist and transplant center.

No for drinkers: If you are still actively drinking you will not be a candidate for liver transplant. Most centers require a minimum of 6 month sobriety and active participation in substance arise counseling.

Liver transplant: Exclusively if you can stop, demonstrate sobriety with complete abstinence for six months and complete intensive outpatient therapy. Ultimately, all transplant programs have a listing committee that oversees this process.
