Choose a battle: It isn't an easy habit to break and more times than not...It might have to run its time. They do have that stuff you can paint on their nails but some kids like that after a while. What we recommend it to place a sock over the hand that contains those delicious fingers. Or both if need be. If they pull off the sock...Tape it to their arm or pjs.

Nailpolish: The application of a clear nailpolish to the thumb which has an undesirable flavor often breaks the habit. It is also used by adults who bite their nails without being aware. Ask your pharmacist for the product name.

Give it time: Most kids stop thumbsucking on their own, and if not, when they get into school and see their friends don't do it anymore, that is often a big motivator to stop. There are many techniques to try, but if a kid wants a thumb they will find a way. If all else fails, a pediatric dentist visit may provide you with some helpful advice.
