Genetic disease: The disease is a group of progressive disorders that affect the peripheral nerves and result in problems with movement and sensation. Peripheral nerves connect the brain and spinal cord to muscles and to sensory cells that detect sensations such as touch, pain, heat, and sound. It becomes apparent in adolescence or early adulthood. Genetic Disorder: Charcot-marie-tooth (cmt) disease is an inherited disorder of the peripheral nerves. Cmt and other inherited disorders are due to defects of genes for various proteins in the nerve fibers. Usually the first signs of CMT are that the child or teenager has problems with his feet. He may have ankle sprains, tripping, or appear clumsy. Special genetic tests are available to identify some types o cmt.
