What sort of disease is charcot-marie-tooth disease?

Neuropathy: Charcot-marie-tooth (cmt) comes in a few different types. They are genetic disorders that affect function of peripheral nerves and are known as hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (hsmn). They are slowly progressive diseases that often start in the 1st or 2nd decade and have progressive sensory and muscle function in the legs (starting at the feet) and progress upward, affecting arms too.

Genetic Disorder: Charcot-marie-tooth (cmt) disease is an inherited disorder of the peripheral nerves. Cmt and other inherited disorders are due to defects of genes for various proteins in the nerve fibers. Usually the first signs of CMT are that the child or teenager has problems with his feet. He may have ankle sprains, tripping, or appear clumsy. Special genetic tests are available to identify some types o cmt.
