A member asked:

Does hiv change your genes to make you immunodeficient?

5 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

NO: Hiv kills t cells, which are the masterminds of the immune response. There are many other immunological targets for HIV that together result in severely impaired defenses and subsequent infections and sometimes cancer. Hiv might alter the gene expression of the cells it infects, however these cells eventually die.

No: Hiv doesn't cause immune deficiency by changing your genes. It kills t cells, which are the quarterbacks of your immune system, telling all the other parts what to do. Without those instructions, your immune system doesn't work well and you become immune deficient.
