General versus spec: Thrombosis is merely the process of a clot forming in a vessel. It can be everything from a normal process after you cut yourself to a heart attack or stroke. A deep venous thrombosis is merely a clot forming in one of the deep veins, usually of the arm or leg. These are notable because they can migrate to the lungs and cause problems there.

Location of Clot: Thrombosis is the medical term for a clot. This can happen anywhere in the body. Deep vein thrombosis means that the clot is in the deep veins which most commonly occur on the legs. The deep veins are located within the muscle.
