It Depends: It is common for stress to cause a disturbance of a person's mood and a neck injury is certainly bound to be stressful. Also, sometimes-the opiate pain medication can cause depression as a side effect. I often treat patients with an antidepressant medication called nortriptyline, which is taken at bedtime and can help with sleep, depression, anxiety and pain. Ask your doctor about it. Good luck.

Talk to your doc: Your doc is in best position to offer advice about your condition. In general, depression is common complication of chronic pain, as people wear down. This causes cycle of decreased pain tolerance and more depression. Antidepressant medications are an often used adjunct in chronic pain treatment and can treat depression. Common: Chronic pain and depression go hand and hand. Numerous studies have tied depression to higher pain levels in people with chronic pain. It is imperative you find a physician who approaches pain through a multimodality treatment program and addresses the depression as a factor in your pain. Treatment may include cognitive behavior therapy, anti-depressant medications, and/or cardiovascular exercise.
