See below: Arthritis: arthr - joint, itis - swelling/inflammation --- inflammation of a joint which may include the cartilage (chondritis) and ligaments. Usually from chronic degeneration. Bursitis: burs - purse/bag, itis- swelling/inflammation --- inflammation of the padding (shock absorber) that overlays and separates joints - usually from overuse (runners, ball pitchers, etc).

Site of irritation : Simply put arthritis is inflammation of the joint and bursitis is inflammation of the bursa. It depends on where in your anatomy is being irritated . There are bursas and joints all over the place.
