It depends: Girls 13 + or boys 14+ who do not yet have breast or testicular enlargement have delayed puberty. Most often these kids are just late bloomers. Treatment depends on factors like, underlying illness, underweight, family history, psychosocial issues for the child given the delay. If we need to jump start the process, girls receive small doses of estrogen and boys get tesosterone for a limited time.
