Too broad question : Several reasons could cause swelling, more info needed. Do you have an infection? What about rheumatoid arthritis? History of gout or any recent trauma? Even a hangnail can be responsible for it. Please check with your local er doctor or your pcp. Good luck.

Swelling can b from: Trauma, crush, sprain, osteoarthritis, bruise, gout, inflammatory arthritis, circulation issues, carpal tunnel, tendonitis, trigger finger , tenosynovisits either infectious or aseptic, salty food, thyroid disease, water retention, kidney disease, tight garments, tight ring, sleep position, fracture, dislocation, bug bite, sliver, rose thorn, atypical bacterial infection, fungal infection.
