Labyrinthritis: An inner ear infection due to virus could cause sudden intense symptoms you describe, and usually, some lingering problem for a few week afterwards. Perhaps you experienced some vomiting and thus, strained left neck, or injured in some other way. See your doctor, and get some physical therapy, both vestibular and for neck. Should recover.
