By the follicle: An amazing dance of hormones coordinates the reproductive system. One of the thousands of egg sacs that are in the ovary matures each month during the reproductive years. During the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle, the follicle releases estradiol, a potent estrogen. After releasing its egg, the follicle becomes a corpus luteum and makes Progesterone instead.
