A 44-year-old member asked:

why do i feel weak in the knees and generally unstable while pregnant?

Relaxin: Relaxin is a hormone that is released in pregnancy. It relaxes the connective tissue in your joints. This makes them looser and makes you more unstable when you walk or exercise. Relaxin is the reason pregnant women waddle. It is also the reason pregnant women are more likely to dislocate their joints. Take things slowly and use extra support when pregnant.

Blood pressure: The usual cuprit is low blood pressure. Make sure you are staying hydrated and, when getting up from bed or seated position, move slowly. If this persists, definitely call your ob.

A 37-year-old member asked:

What would you need to do to prepare for total knee replacement?

Many options: To prepare for a total knee replacement first you should have an informed discussion with your surgeon. Then maximize your health for surgery. Improve your eating habits and take appropriated nutritionals. Do your best to pre-surgically exercise your thigh muscles and hamstrings in preparation for your postop rehab. Get your ice machine ready at home, your walker and a cane. These are basics.

You will also need a preoperative medical evaluation to make sure you are safe for anesthesia. I also have all my patients get a dental check up to ensure there is no active gum or tooth infections that can infect your new knee replacment. If you are overweight, try your best to address your diet and activity to loss some weight and keep on that routine after surgery. Avoid gardening or activities that can scratch your skin prior to your surgery because your surgeon will cancel your surgery if you have open cuts or scrapes on your operative leg the day of surgery. Contact your insurance company to find out what therapy centers in your area accept your insurance for after surgery and which rehab facilities you can go to after surgery if you do not go right home from the hospital.

My boyfriend & I are trying to get pregnant. I'm on Zoloft (sertraline) & my doc is having me get off it slowly; 1 pill every other day for a month & then 1 pill every 3rd day until gone. Does this sound reasonable?

Yes, it's great.: It's best to taper off the zoloft (sertraline) and your doctor has an excellent plan.

Check a preg test : Over the counter pregnancy tests are cheap and reliable. Go do one and then you will know and you won't have to worry about it any more. If you don't want to be pregnant see your doctor for effective birth control.
A member asked:

Period is 4wks late..Iv had pregnancy symptoms but neg blood&urine. Could it still be pregnancy? Waist increased 1inch since last week.

Unlikely: If all testing negative, i doubt it. You may have simply not ovulated last cycle and that is why you are so late. Are your periods normally regular? Check with your obgyn and good luck.
