1st Menses nursing: Nursing 5-6x's/day for 10 min or more is likely to delay ovulation and menses at least 5-6 mos. This is used in the poorer areas of the world as a contraceptive, and it works fairly well. Since a woman can conceive while nursing before her first menses occurs. It's wise to use barrier contraception while nursing.

One year: On average most nursing mother regain their periods by one year after the birth of their baby. The AAP recommends continuing breast feeding for at least a year. Allowing this much time to recover before attempting another pregnancy gives the mother time to regain her best state of health. Absence of periods, however, is no guaranty that one cannot become pregnant.
