One year: On average most nursing mother regain their periods by one year after the birth of their baby. The AAP recommends continuing breast feeding for at least a year. Allowing this much time to recover before attempting another pregnancy gives the mother time to regain her best state of health. Absence of periods, however, is no guaranty that one cannot become pregnant.
