Ancient diagnosis: No one is credited for discovering cleft lip and palate. There are paintings and sculptures from pre-historic times that show people with cleft lip and palate.

Dr Le Monier -France: According to an article written by alexander hugh ferguson md in 1900 for the journal of the american medical association .A french dentist, named le monier in 1764, proposed for the first time to close the cleft in the soft palate by paring the edges and stitching them together.

Classification: Davies and ritchie in 1922 and veau in 1931 attempted to classify clefts but they do not include all types of clefts. Fogh andersen published in 1942 in denmark classified all types of clefts including: 1)hare lip (including alveolus and as far back as the incisive foramen), 2) hare lip and cleft palate, and 3) isolated clefts of the palate as far forward as incisive foramen.
