A member asked:

Is it possible to have a breast abscess when not breastfeeding?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Breast abscesses can occur unrelated to pregnancy, typically via normal skin bacteria entering a break in the skin or nipple. Rx centers on antibiotics and draining any pus, ideally via (repeated) aspirations rather than surgical drainage. Surgical evaluation is mandatory--cancers can masquerade as abscesses.
