How effective are braces for treating underbites and crossbites vs. overbites?

9 doctors weighed in across 7 answers

Effective: Depending on the severity of the bite relationship, orthodontic treatment is pretty successfull at treating all those conditions. There are times when things need surgical treatment in addition to orthodontics. Your orthodontist should be able to tell you ahead of time if surgery may be needed.

The Same: The effectiveness is about the same. Virtually any tooth alignment problem can be corrected with braces (in some cases in combination with other treatments). The only question is how long it will take. The more severe the problem, the longer the treatment. Underbites are usually the toughest overall. However, the outcome should be good in all those cases you mentioned.

Very: Each of three problems you mention are corrected every day by orthodontic specialists. We may often opine that "underbites" are a bit more difficult to resolve because growth may not be our friend; whereas, for "overbites (protrusion of upper teeth), " growth may assist us.

Depends...: It depends on your age, whether you are growing or not and the severity of the problem. It could be very effective, or not effective at all.

Very effective: Braces will treat all these well. Just see one to let them answer these questions. An initial exam is usually free and a lot of information can be gained by this visit.

Braces: braces don't treat anything. Orthodontic Specialists treat malocclusions (overbite, cross bite, rotations, underbites, etc) utilizing brace, aligners, removable appliances, consultation with other practitioners, etc. Malocclusions are like snowflakes, no two are alike. See an Orthodontc Specialist to find out what can be done with and for you.
