Physiologic items: Varicocele, or varicose veins of the testicle, is the most common cause of low sperm count. Hormone disorders are also common causes. Infections of the prostate and the epididymis (sperm ducts) can also lower sperm count.

Many causes: Stress and high scrotal temperature (by varicoceles) can decrease sperm count. Testosterone supplements taken for low libido can quickly suppress sperm production to zero. Rarely, y deletion mutation can be a factor. In many cases, the cause is unknown. Male fertility supplements do not help if sperm concentration is 10 million/ml or lower so please do not waste time using them.
