Depends: It may need to be drained. He may need to take antibiotics, or both. Did a doctor see the boil, or is that your diagnosis? Ointments are rather useless for abscesses since these are under the skin infections. Hot compresses are a good idea, but may not be sufficient. See your doctor please.
