IUI: Most inseminations are by iui, intrauterine insemination. Iui usually feels about like a pap smear. The sperm sample is prepared by spinning and washing. A small soft plastic tube is slipped through the cervix into the uterus and the sperm released into the uterus.

An office procedure: Insemination in an office setting is a short safe procedure. A speculum exam is done (like a Pap smear), the cervix prepped, and a very small soft catheter (tubing) inserted through the cervix to introduce the sperm. Most specialists put sperm inside the uterus (IUI), although it can also be deposited in the cervix (ICI). Most women describe the procedure as trivial to minor.
