Risks are Relative: All x-ray exams are a balance between how much the information will help diagnose something versus the radiation dosage that must be used. Dental ct machines are made to get the most information from the lowest dosage possible and many times, we can see things that are not visible on a regular x-ray. Voice your concerns with your doc and see why he/she feels they might get a better answer for you.

Relatively low: Alara-as low as reasonably appropriate. The risk is relatively low on most machines, but all are not the same. If your dentist wants to do a cbct, ask the dentist about the exposure from their machine. Ours does a 3d of about 4 or 5 teeth with the radiation equivalent to two dental x-rays. It is one of the lowest exposures.
