Typically the: Discomfort only lasts a few days -- tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil and a soft diet will help get you through it. If the brackets are cutting your cheeks, lips or tongue, use orthodontic wax to help.

Pain meds: It happens regularly as the wires are tightened. Once you get them done regularly, the soreness should only last a couple of days. Pain meds can help the symptoms but it may affect the movement of your teeth.

OTC Pain meds: For typical orthodontic pain, otc pain meds usually cover it. Things like tylenol, (acetaminophen) advil, Motrin can relieve the discomfort of braces. In my practice I have found that Motrin works the best. Just follow the label instructions and you should be fine. If the pain continues, contact your orthodontist, as there may be something else wrong.

Aspirin products : Most orthodontic soreness will pass in a few days. It can be reduced by chewing sugarless gum immediately after your adjustment. Some wires are heat activated and rinsing with cold water will give you relief. Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory and should help if you are allowed to take aspirin.
