Pills or procedures.: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (hcm) means abnormal thickening of the heart muscle; when this interferes with flow of blood out of the heart, it is "obstructive" (hocm). Medication is sufficient treatment for many patients; surgical or catheter procedures can relieve obstruction. Also important are family screening; avoidance of strenuous exercise; and in some cases implantation of a defibrillator.
