Peripheral nerve?: Possibly, the angle of his arm at night resulted in nerve compression at wrist, ?Carpal tunnel, but maybe problem a bit higher at elbow level, such as front or back of elbow. Perhaps benign and self-limited, but, if too uncomfortable or persists longer than a few days, will need attention. Perhaps get a wrist splint at drugstore and try at night. See your doc if no benefit.

Probably unrelated: I assume that his cerebral palsy has been stable for many years. It is more likely that he has a separate problem. What you describe sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome. Often the symptoms occur at night or in the morning and are improved with pumping the hand and massage to improve blood flow. If the symptoms persist and get worse, he may need a brace or even consider surgery.

Carpal tunnel: Carpal tunnel syndrome is common in adults with cerebral palsy, especially those who use lofstrand crutches (forearm crutches) and in some who use a manual wheelchair. Can develop over time, but usually not suddenly. I agree with other answer that could have been nerve compression due to abnormal positioning overnight while sleeping.
