Anterior Drawer Test: The anterior drawer test checks for laxity in the knee joint by attempting to slide the lower leg forward while the upper leg remains stationary. This would be difficult to perform on yourself.

Lachman's,Pivotshift: The two most sensitive physical exam tests for an acl tear are the lachman's (which tests the ability of the acl to prevent a forward thrust of the tibia), and the pivot shift (which tests the ability of the acl to prevent a rotational shift of the inner part of the knee). These, sometimes along with an MRI give us indications for recommending reconstructions.

Acl tear: The best test is the "lachman" test which is when the examining physician translates the tibia forward with the knee flexed at 20 degrees. The degree of "endpoint" is assessed. If a "soft" endpoint is apparent an MRI will generally confirm a torn acl. Make sure that the hamstrings are not tight hampering the exam.
