Unknown: While we know that some types of polyps if the GI tract can turn in to cancer in genetically predisposed individuals, we don't know what exactly that predisposition is and don't do routine testing for it, and don't know how to treat it. Why some people develop these types of polyps is also unknown, but most likely a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Very complex issue.
