A member asked:

The child's palatine processes have not fused. how can you tell if his palatine bones have fused normally?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Palpation, inspection: The palate is formed by ridges that grows inward to meet in the midline. If it does not you may have a visable cleft palate, a defect you can feel under the skin called a sub-mucous cleft & that may be reflected in a split of the uvula, that thing that sticks down in the middle.A cleft uvula can sometimes sticks together like wet book pages & be missed on exam.
