What is the common response to rehabilitation after shoulder replacement surgery?

Typically good: Typically people do very well following shoulder surgery, even replacement. Many options exist for rehab. Some people require a short period of therapy in the hospital. Others are trained to do therapy at home. Still others go daily to weekly to a therapist's office for treatment. Talk to your orthopedist - they will know what would be best for you.

Shoulder Rehab: Rehab following total shoulder replacement is critical to return the patient to function. Initial goals of surgery include reduction in pain. Initial goals of rehab are reduction in i flammation and pain, restore range of motion, and ultimately functional use of the operated arm.

Pain relief: Like other joint replacement surgeries, total shoulder replacement is an excellent pain relief surgery. Hip and knee replacements are slightly better at restoring function, but shoulder replacements are very well tolerated. Range of motion is usually limited for the first 6 weeks. Significant gains in strenght and range of motion are seen with physical therapy. Overall patients are satisfied.
