Depends: Usually within a few days. If its left thumb, its a few days. If its right thumb, maybe around a week. Depends on your pain level, and ability to bend your thumb. Your surgeon may have specific recommendations and precautions that you should adhere to.

The next day: After surgery, i usually dress patients in a soft bandage. This allows maximum flexibility and use of the hand. I allow patients to type, write, and drive one day following surgery.

The following day: I perform an endoscopic approach for this procedure and allow patients to drive the following day. I know other doctors who perform open technique and also allow driving within 2 days.
