A member asked:

Can child abuse lead to a person becoming bipolar?

Yes it can.: Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder on the basis of complex interplay between genetics, environment and experience/behavior. The severe stress of being abused as a child can certainly activate a genetic loading for bipolar disorder. In my experience a high percentage of persons diagnosed with bipolar disorder have been abused during childhood.

Agree w Dr. Bausek: Predisposition for Bipolar Disorder often runs in family lines (may have family member with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, etc). Child abuse can be the trigger that activates expression of Bipolar Disorder.
