8 weeks: I recommend full time splinting for 8 weeks before initiating exercises. A mallet finger injury represents a rupture of the extensor tendon near the fingertip. Because the tendon is so thin at this level, surgical intervention is rarely needed.

12 weeks: Mallet finger typically responds to careful splinting alone. Most surgeons would recommend 8 weeks of full time splinting with a special manner to put on and take off the splint with the fingertip always extended, followed by nighttime splinting by 4 weeks. After that time, most patients can discontinue their splints and start working on range of motion. Compliance is a must to optimize the result.

Recovery 3 months: Without surgery, treatment can take between 6 weeks and 3 months. Surgery can take 15-45 minutes. Recovery can take up to 3 months.
