See doctor: Shooting pain in the leg is sometimes referred to as sciatica. It may be caused by inflammation of one of the spinal nerves. Without treatment, the pain can be quite debilitating. There are many possible treatment options including medications, pt, and injections. The option I have found to be most helpful is injection of local anesthetic and steroid directly onto the inflamed nerve.
