This all depends: Where is the wound? What is the cause of the open wound? Is it from a diabetic ulcer? A traumatic event? A venous ulcer? Is the wound infected? Is it draining? There are many variables that go into deciding what to put on it.

What to avoid: It is hard to recommend a "best" without more information. However, wounds need an environment that advantages healing and disadvantages bacteria. So, avoid vaseline or oil based products--such as neosporin. Ok to shower, hairdryer your wound (bacteria lose in hot/dry), use water based wound moisture (hydrogel) and gauze dressings. Ok to get in to see your doc, or wound clinic.
