Arthritis: Osteoarthritis is more common in women, after 40. It affects the small joints of the fingers, primarily those closer to the palm. You may experience morning stiffness, which resolves during the day. Often the pain is relieved by nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, such as alleve, etc. Check with your pcp and don't forget to take otc meds carefully.
