Multidimensional: There are many phases of adulthood with varying typical tasks. Intellectual development in early adulthood (say 20-30) involves applying what one has learned to a set of discrete real-world tasks (family, career). This requires constraining one's pov. Later in life (50+), further development requires a re-broadening of one's outlook to encompass much that one needed to set aside.
