What are other alternatives to carotid endartertectomy?

Carotid Stenting: Carotid endarterectomy is a time honored procedure with very good results and low complication rates. In certain situations such as 1) previous history of neck irradiation, 2) previous neck surgery, or 3) active heart disease, then carotid stenting is another alternative. There are studies still being done to determine if carotid stenting is safe or patients who do not have the conditions listed.

Medicine or stent: Antiplatelet therapy with Aspirin with or without plavix (clopidogrel). If too narrow for medicine, a stent with distal protection may be indicated.
