Big difference: Spinal fractures are thankfully pretty rare. They usually occur from a fairly high energy injury such as a car accident or fall from 10 feet or more. "throwing your back out" is unfortunately common. It is a fairly generic term for muscle strains, and less commonly injuries to the lumbar discs or joints.
